Surgery Errors and Medical Malpractice Claims (Pt. 1)

Undergoing surgery may be a scary enough proposition on its own, especially when these procedures are major, will go on for hours and may have some risks for patients. What can make the idea of surgery even more overwhelming, however, is the possibility of surgeons, nurses or other medical professionals making mistakes that can have long-term, irreversible or even fatal impacts on patients.

In this two-part blog, we will discuss how surgery errors happen, some of the issues that can increase the risk of surgery mistakes and people’s options for holding negligent medical professionals responsible if or when they’ve been injured by surgery errors.

Types of Surgery Errors and Mistakes: When to Suspect Medical Malpractice

More than 4,000 surgery errors occur every year in the U.S. If you’ve been injured due to surgery mistakes, contact our Denver malpractice and hospital liability lawyers.

Researchers believe that more than 4,000 entirely preventable surgery mistakes occur every year in the U.S. Some of the most common types of these surgery mistakes include (but are not necessarily limited to):

  • Surgeons performing a procedure on the wrong area of the body (like, for instance, performing surgery on the right leg instead of the left leg)
  • Surgeons performing the wrong procedure on patients
  • Surgeons damaging other organs or tissues when performing procedures
  • Medical professionals leaving instruments or sponges inside of patients
  • Anesthesiologists failing to administer the proper types and/or amounts of anesthesia to patients (this can include administering anesthesia that patients may be allergic to or that may be contraindicated for patients based on their medical history and/or other medications they may be taking).

While some types of surgery errors may be obvious (such as in cases when surgery is performed on the wrong area of the body), in other cases, it’s not so clear to patients when they may have been the victim of surgery mistakes. As a result, it’s crucial that these people consult with an attorney for some professional advice regarding their rights and potential claims to compensation.
